Green Silver ?!?!

Did you know that the brand of silver clay we use is eco-friendly?

Art Clay Silver is a metal clay containing microscopic silver particles (or silver and copper particles in the sterling silver clay), which are mixed with organic binders and water to produce a pliable, mouldable clay similar to ceramic clay.

Art Clay Silver is produced by AIDA Chemical Industries - a Japanese company who specialise in recycling and reclaiming metals. The silver in their clays is reclaimed from waste products from photographic and electronics industries amongst others and is refined then used in their silver clay production.

We are pleased to announce that we have been asked by Dorset jewellery designer and silversmith Jenny Greenhow if we would run classes in how to use silver clay.  Always happy to oblige, we will soon be running classes in silver clay at her studio in Holton Heath in Dorset (about half way between Poole and Wareham.

Introduction to silver clay
Come along and learn the basics of how to design and make your own jewellery using silver clay.
Class cost will include a 7g starter pack of Art Clay Silver (fine silver clay) and use of all the tools and equipment necessary and take you through everything you need to know to get up and running making silver clay jewellery.  Dates and costs to be confirmed.

Intermediate silver clay
For those who've already mastered the basics of silver clay (in the Introduction to silver clay class for example) we will also have more specific classes to make more technically advanced and complex silver jewellery pieces.  These will concentrate on a specific topic or project rather than the broader, more general nature of the introductory class.  Examples may include the use of silver clay paste to build up realistic leaf pendants, adding a touch of gold with gold leaf, stone setting etc.  Class and material costs and dates to be confirmed.

At all classes there will also be the opportunity to purchase the tools, equipment (and of course silver clay!) that you'll need to carry on designing and making your jewellery at home.

For more information, please see our main CLASSES or CLASS SCHEDULE pages on our website.  The CLASS SCHEDULE page is currently awaiting dates to be confirmed.  You can also email us for more information or submit an enquiry via our CONTACT form.

Casting a fossil in sterling silver

Having spent a great day of learning to cast silver with Jenny Greenhow (www.jennygreenhowjewellery.co.uk) last Friday, we thought we'd have a go at casting a solid silver fossil of an ammonite in our own workshop.

See a quick video of how it went on our YouTube channel here:

Tadaaaa! Our new silver jewellery studio is complete!

Our new silver jewellery studio!
After moving premises at the end of last year, we had a new space to turn into a dedicated silver jewellery studio.
It took longer than expected but was finally finished and ready to equip in December.

We have 3 available jewellers workstations, a shared kiln, solder and pickling area and an area for our silver clay work.

We're very excited at how it's turned out although it's now crammed with equipment and work-in-progress, so doesn't look quite as sparse as this photo any more.
